Collection: Emma - A sweet neighbor.
It was a brisk November day, precisely at sundown, when I met Emma. My stroll down the gravel path was the beginning of a routine. Behind a tall black iron fence, protecting the sanctuary, she was walking in my direction, staring at the ground, kicking a brown bottle. An errant swipe from Emma's bare toe crashed the bottle against the fence. She looked up from the ground. I caught the eye of the slender girl with long hair wearing an old nightshirt. Head down and increasing her cadence, she vanished into the dark woods.
This became my routine, walking the lonely gravel lane near sundown. At times, the girl appeared, always intent on the sand under her feet. Even as fall drew colder, her bare feet and thin dress never changed.
As fall neared winter, our brief encounters became part of our daily routine. At times, her gait slowed as we glanced, passing in silence. Glances turned towards subtle trust.
My feet crunched through the light January snow, adding to my glance. I gave a soft "Hello". It was Valentine's day when I added, "How are you today?" Behind the iron standard Emma replied, "Here." Scampering toward the wood, her bare feet marked the snow.
As time passed Emma reluctently began letting me into her life. After months of encounters, a sense of confidence has emerged. Emma has permitted me to present this dialogue to the reader.
I believe she is letting her me in. Hopefully to the point I can contiue these blogs and document her lifes.
